[ibarw] [help] Help Oyate.Org

So I have been trying to get an ibarw post together, and a proper Lizbet Talks About Issues post may yet follow. But this needs to go up now, now, now.

I just got off the phone with Oyate.

People who hang around this web space and read the posts I make about representation in fiction, y'all have seen links to Oyate before.

Oyate is a Native organization working to see that our lives and histories are portrayed honestly, and so that all people will know our stories belong to us. For Indian children, it is as important as it has ever been for them to know who they are and what they come from. For all children, it is time to know and acknowledge the truths of history. Only then will they come to have the understanding and respect for each other that now, more than ever, will be necessary for life to continue.

The great Lakota leader, Tatanka Iotanka—Sitting Bull—said, “Let us put our minds together and see what life we will make for our children.” The great Cuban revolutionary, José Martí, said, “We work for children because children know how to love, because children are the hope of the world.” Our work is to nurture in our children a sense of self and community. Our hope is that they will grow up healthy and whole.

Our work includes critical evaluation of books and curricula with Indian themes, conducting of “Teaching Respect for Native Peoples” workshops and institutes; administration of a small resource center and reference library; and distribution of children’s, young adult, and teacher books and materials, with an emphasis on writing and illustration by Native people.

Our hope is that by making many excellent books available to encourage many more, especially from Native writers and artists. Oyate, our organiztion’s name, is the Dakota word for people. It was given to us by a Dakota friend.

Oyate has been offered a generous grant that will help them do a major website overhaul. Information on the grant is available here. When sparkymonster linked to this this morning, I checked my bank balance and made a phone call...because I have used Oyate's resources many, many times, and I figured I could find them $10 in my budget for all the use I've gotten out of the resources they provide.

According to Beverly, the delightful woman I spoke to, as of ten minutes until ten central time, and including my little $10, they are now at $3,217.00 of the needed $5000. They must raise the remaining $1783.00 by Saturday, August 1 in order to receive their grant.

Beverly had never heard of IBARW. She didn't know Oyate and their fundraising goal was being discussed on LJ. She...does now. What can I say, I'm a Southerner, we like to talk to people.

I know that money is tight for everyone right now. If you are broke, if you don't got it to give, that is a-ok. If this isn't the organization you want to support, that's okay too; there are more people doing good work in the world than any one of us can afford to underwrite.

But if you have $5 or $10 or $20 hanging around, and see fit to use it to help Oyate continue to do their good work, that would be awesome. To paraphrase something I once said to omnisti, $1783 is just 178.3 people with ten bucks each. But we need to find those one hundred seventy eight and a third people before Saturday.

You can donate here by phone, mail or via Paypal. To use Paypal, click the "Network for Good" link. If you call in, let them know you found out about it because of IBARW; I'd love for this word to get out earlier next time.

Reposts are encouraged and your awesomeness praised in advance. doctoreon, being as he is awesome, has created a box of repostable text that will preserve links for those who'd like to boost signal.

Thank you for your time.

UPDATE: I spoke to the wonderful Beverly again yesterday around six central time. Their total at that point was up to close to $3800, meaning they raised nearly $500 yesterday alone, but help is still needed to get them to goal by 8/1/2009!

alexandraerin pointed me here to see the amazing astounding absolutely wow of the signal-boostery that's happened since yesterday. Internet, for all that y'all drive me nuts sometimes, y'all are awesome and don't y'all forget it.

Yup. Or three Starbucks iced coffees. I know it's hot. Get an iced beverage, and then put $1 or $2 in an envelope to donate. Or if you can't afford to donate, signal boost where you can. Print out a flyer and put it on the office bulletin board or something

Yep yep yep!

The Internet is an amazing, amazing place, I really have faith we can do this. People are already signal-boosting it, and I bet IBARW can kick it into high gear and get things done for 'em.

Not much, bb, other than you ROCKING SOCKS. Editing my community posts to let people know there's a text box; will you comment on K's and let her know, since she's been posting it far and wide?

I also edited my post to put in the contact info. I had to click from K's to yours, and then on to find it myself.

You're awesome. I tend to do "go here" links, but I may edit when I get out of the doc's office, I've got to dash in five minutes.

Thanks for boosting the signal. :) I had put quite a few books on my wishlist so I'm excited for them.

(Edited because unlike my icon, I really do need more coffee.)

Hi, I'd like to donate, but I don't want to sign up to the network thing - would you being willing to take a Paypal donation and pass it on?
Jul. 30th, 2009 06:48 pm (UTC)
I'm willing to do so. Send me e-mail to starkeymonster @ gmail and we'll set something up
Jul. 30th, 2009 08:48 pm (UTC)
Hmm. I'm willing, but that involves fees getting taken out on the front end. Let me verify whether you can donate directly via Paypal first, and if I can't get an answer by tomorrow, I'll do it. Okay?
Jul. 30th, 2009 05:21 pm (UTC)
Done and done.
Jul. 30th, 2009 08:52 pm (UTC)
Rock and socks. You're my hero.
Jul. 30th, 2009 06:14 pm (UTC)
Meant to post this earlier, but....signal boosted a while ago!
Jul. 30th, 2009 08:54 pm (UTC)
Whoo! Thank you!

You rock my world, lady. <3 If I understood the lady right, they raised about $500 yesterday between ten and six. Hope is still there.
Jul. 31st, 2009 02:11 pm (UTC)
So um. I hate talking on the phone SO MUCH. Could you possibly give Oyate a call today and find out how they are doing donation wise? I am hoping IBARW gave them a boost.
Jul. 31st, 2009 03:55 pm (UTC)
I gave them a ring yesterday at six central and they had raised about $500 more due to efforts yesterday, they were sitting at $3700-plus. So we did give 'em a boost.
Today is Moving Truck Day and I'm going to be spending most of my afternoon at the insurance office, county clerk, and rental place, but I will try my damndest to give them a ring after lunch.
Jul. 31st, 2009 03:58 pm (UTC)
WOO to $500 from yesterday. I hope you survive your moving.
Aug. 1st, 2009 03:51 pm (UTC)
I will. See my most recent entry: WE DID IT.
Jul. 31st, 2009 03:28 pm (UTC)
Do you know if they've met their goal yet or do they still need more?
Jul. 31st, 2009 03:30 pm (UTC)
As of six o'clock-ish central yesterday when I called back to check on Paypal options, they were still about $1200 away from the goal.
Jul. 31st, 2009 03:32 pm (UTC)
Ugh. I also just found out that California has cut *all* government funding to domestic violence shelters. A 100% cut.
Jul. 31st, 2009 03:58 pm (UTC)
That makes my head explode SO MUCH
Jul. 31st, 2009 04:00 pm (UTC)
If you still want to have any kind of head left, don't look at the larger list of what's been cut.
Jul. 31st, 2009 04:02 pm (UTC)
I will listen to your wisdom
Jul. 31st, 2009 04:20 pm (UTC)

norly WAT

I don't know why this comment wasn't emailed to me. Possibly my spam filter decided that U-Haul would be more comfortable renting a truck to someone still visibly in possession of an unexploded head.

Oh, *fuck*.

May the Governator someday find himself crushed under his Hummer and no help coming.
Aug. 1st, 2009 03:54 pm (UTC)
I'm not generally much for prayers for bodily harm, but - amen, may it ever be so.
Aug. 1st, 2009 04:22 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I felt ashamed as I posted it.

But it's not as if we, like other states, are saying "Oh, shit, time to parole some of the nonviolent drug offenders we stuffed our prisons with." No, it's "screw the poor, the mentally ill, and the abused."
Aug. 1st, 2009 05:09 pm (UTC)
Yep. I understood the spirit of the sentiment and agree.
Jul. 31st, 2009 11:18 pm (UTC)
When I called yesterday and gave my address, she said in surprise, "Oh! You're local!" Which tells you how widespread the impact has been.
Aug. 1st, 2009 03:53 pm (UTC)

See my most recent entry for the good news.
